Deadly West Bank attacks follow Israeli raid on Al-Aqsa

Image
A Palestinian man and an Israeli guard have been killed in separate incidents in the occupied West Bank after Israeli forces raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man overnight on Friday in the north of the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Yahya Adwan, 27, was shot in the chest during an Israeli army operation in the town of Azzun, the ministry said in a statement on Saturday. Meanwhile, a guard was attacked at the entrance of the Ariel settlement, the Israeli army said, adding that they were pursuing the perpetrators. Hamas, the Palestinian movement that governs the Gaza Strip, hailed the killing as an “heroic operation”, with spokesman Hazem Qassem declaring it a response to the “attacks on Al-Aqsa,” Islam’s third holiest site, which has been one of the focal points for weeks of violence. The Palestinian Red Crescent said 42 people had been injured on Friday morni

Comic book artist Neal Adams, credited for reviving Batman, dies at 80

Image
American comic book artist Neal Adams, largely credited for reviving Batman in the 1960s and '70s, has died aged 80. Adams' wife of 45 years, Marilyn Adams, told The Hollywood Reporter the artist died in New York of complications from sepsis. Adams was known in the comic book world for his photorealistic stylings and, along with writer Dennis O'Neal, he was credited for giving Batman comics their gritty undertone, after years of it being a campy series targeted at children. “It was no secret that we were doing Batman right,” Adams said during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2010. “It was as if the memory of DC Comics went along with the statements that both Denny and I were making, that we want it to be more realistic, more gritty. And that’s how we remember — whether it was true or not — that Batman should be. And when we did it, everybody went, ‘Ah, that’s it. We don’t need comedy anymore.'” Adams also had a few years' stint at Marvel Comics, working on beloved

Barr: GOP has ‘big opportunity’ to move past Trump in 2024

Image
Former Attorney General William Barr said Thursday that the GOP needs to elect someone other that former President Trump to be party’s presidential nominee in 2024. Barr, who served as the nation’s top prosecutor under Trump, was asked on Newsmax if he would vote for the former president in 2024. “I don’t think he should be our nominee — the Republican Party nominee,” Barr responded. “And I think Republicans have a big opportunity — it would be a big mistake to put him forward,” he added.  Trump and Barr’s relationship crumbled after Barr refuted claims that the 2020 election was tainted by widespread voter fraud. In his memoir “One Damn Thing After Another,” Barr said that Trump had  “lost his grip” after the 2020 presidential election. “He stopped listening to his advisers, became manic and unreasonable, and was off the rails,” Barr wrote. “He surrounded himself with sycophants, including many whack jobs from outside the government, who fed him a steady diet of comforting but unsuppo

India's Tata Group plans manufacturing push into chips and EV batteries

Image
India’s Tata Group is planning a foray into semiconductor manufacturing as the coffee-to-cars conglomerate seeks to mitigate the pain from the global chip crisis as well as reduce dependence on imports. Besides making chips, plans to manufacture batteries for electric vehicles will also be announced soon, N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, the group’s main holding company, said at an event in Mumbai on Friday. Mr Chandrasekaran had spoken about evaluating partnerships for cell and battery manufacturing in India and Europe in Tata Motors' annual report in June. The initiatives by the $103 billion Tata Group are aligned to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attempts to make India a leader in semiconductor production and reduce its reliance on imports amid global chain disruptions. Several international chip giants including Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing are exploring India as a potential manufacturing base, the nation’s Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on T

Jeff Bezos loses $20.5bn to drop to third place on Forbes' wealthy list

Image
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos slipped to third place in the Forbes' Real-Time Billionaires List with his net worth dropping to $150.1 billion driven by a rout in Amazon shares. The billionaire saw $20.5bn of his wealth melt away after the e-commerce company's results left investors disappointed, helping fuel the worst month for technology stocks in years. This placed Bernard Arnault, chairman of French luxury group LVMH, in second place with a personal fortune of $157.7bn, according to Forbes . In contrast to the Forbes' list, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index named Mr Bezos the world's second richest person with a net worth of $148bn. At his peak this year, the Amazon founder enjoyed a net worth of more than $210bn. Amazon shares were down 14 per cent on Friday after it reported its first quarterly loss in seven years and the slowest sales growth since 2001 as the largest online retailer struggles to build off the major gains it made early in the pandemic. The company has

For CEOs like Vinita Bali and Vineet Nayar, career gets diverse after retirement

Image
NEW DELHI: CEOs wear many hats and play many a role within the organisation they lead. And, as they move off the corporate limelight and give up day-to-day operational management, many of these business leaders are juggling multiple roles that provide diversity the CEO job cannot offer. Vinita Bali’s plural career started when she took up a full-time operational role as managing director of Britannia Industries. She was on a few overseas boards even then. For her, this diversity was very attractive.                                                                     Vinita Bali "Through this, you learn about different industries; you’re not focused only on your operational responsibilities." Currently, she is on two boards abroad, in the UK and Switzerland. At home, she continues to be a director at Crisil (since 2014) and Titan (since 2006). She also sits on the board of the Hindu group of newspapers. Bali was among 27 global leaders appointed by the UN secretary general to

Why the clean energy transition is not suffering from a lack of resources

Image
The world isn’t cutting greenhouse gas emissions with anything like the speed required to avoid the most dangerous effects of climate change, as the latest UN climate report published this month affirmed. Despite this, it’s become a trope of sorts to warn that we’re in danger of going too fast. The overlapping drivers and effects of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, Covid-related supply chain disruptions and rising inflation have all fuelled a set of haphazard narratives that the clean energy transition will be highly inflationary — or, alternatively, that it will stall. The worries usually centre on the implications of soaring demand for commodities such as cobalt, lithium, nickel and copper that are used for electric vehicles, solar PV cells, wind turbines and electrical grids. Isabel Schnabel of Germany’s Bundesbank spoke in January about the inflationary effects of green energy; although she later acknowledged that this had to be seen alongside inflationary effects of foss

Elon Musk fans solicit future Twitter jobs by tweeting at him

Image
Although Elon Musk’s $44 billion deal to acquire Twitter is still months away from closing, some of Mr Musk’s fans are soliciting future employment at the social media platform via the mercurial entrepreneur’s Twitter feed. Considerable turnover is likely, at least based on Mr Musk’s Twitter feed, which is often critical of leadership. So Mr Musk’s followers are taking their shot. “Hire me to run Twitter as VP of Product,” wrote Nikita Bier, co-founder of a positivity-focused polling app called tbh that was acquired by Meta Platforms, in a post tagging Mr Musk on Twitter. “I’ve been building social apps for 11 years – and not in a way that leads products to decay like a typical BigTech ‘product director dad.’” . @elonmusk Hire me to run Twitter as VP of Product. Switzerland 'ignored risks faced by Pakistani Christian in asylum case'

Image
Switzerland has been told to pay nearly €7,000 to a Christian convert from Islam because it failed to assess the risk to his life if he was sent back to Pakistan following an unsuccessful asylum claim. A European court ruled that the authorities would violate the rights to life and to avoid torture or degrading treatment if they sent the man — identified only as M.A.M — back to Pakistan after seven years in Switzerland. The man first claimed asylum in Switzerland in 2015 after claiming that a local family had tried to kill him following a land dispute in Pakistan. He moved between different refugee centres in the Alpine nation and was baptised the following year after attending different Christian places of worship, according to a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. He was joined only by a pastor at his asylum hearing and did not have a lawyer throughout the asylum process, it said. His asylum request was turned down in 2018 and a series of appeals were thrown out before he

Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to jail for corruption

A court in military-ruled Myanmar has sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to five years in jail after finding the civilian leader guilty in the first of 11 corruption cases against her, according to media reports. The Reuters and Associated Press news agencies, citing sources with knowledge of the matter, said the sentence was announced in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, on Wednesday. The judge handed down the verdict within moments of the court convening, Reuters reported. The case centred on allegations that Aung San Suu Kyi, 76, accepted 11.4 kg (402 oz) of gold and cash payments totalling $600,000 from her protege-turned-accuser, former Yangon chief minister Phyo Min Thein. She had denied the charges and called the allegations “absurd”. ‘A life sentence’ The Nobel laureate, who led Myanmar for five years before being forced from office when the military seized power in a coup in February 2021, has been charged with at least 18 offences, which carry a combined maximum jail term approaching 19

Singapore executes 'disabled' Malaysian Nagaenthran Dharmalingam on drugs charges

Image
A Malaysian man convicted of drug trafficking has been executed in Singapore despite his mother's claims he had an intellectual disability. Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, 34, had been on death row for more than 10 years for trafficking 44 grams of heroin into Singapore, which has some of the world's toughest drugs laws. His lawyers had filed multiple appeals against his execution, saying he was intellectually disabled. His brother Navin Kumar, 22, told Reuters the execution had been carried out. He said the body would be sent back to Malaysia for a funeral in the town of Ipoh. A Singapore court on Tuesday turned down a legal challenge put forward by Nagaenthran's mother, clearing the way for the execution by hanging. At the end of the hearing, Nagaenthran and his family reached through a gap in a glass screen to grasp each others' hands tightly as they wept. His cries of "ma" could be heard around the courtroom, Reuters said. About 300 people held a candlelight vig

Hackers for hire attempt to destroy hedge fund manager's reputation

Image
Hackers bombarded a British hedge fund manager with 3,000 emails and fake news stories about his mortgage in an effort to destroy his reputation after being hired by a corporate rival. Criminals even sought to gain personal information about Matthew Earl by pretending to be his sister in a three-year campaign when he raised concerns over the controversial German payments company Wirecard. Mr Earl, a former City analyst who runs the hedge fund ShadowFall, said he was targeted by a group called Dark Basin. This group has been linked to Aviram Azari, who this week pleaded guilty in New York to a conspiracy to target journalists and critics of Wirecard using phishing emails. Mr Earl said the hacking attempts started in 2016 after ShadowFall, nicknamed the “dark destroyer” in the City, criticised the financial performance of Wirecard. The German company was later mired in a series of accounting scandals and went bust. He said: “I was being sent very targeted emails, which were crafted with

More than a dozen people were riding the chariot when it came into contact with an overhead high-voltage power line. Three people are in serious condition with severe burn injuries, police said. The people have burn injuries,” Dinesh Ponraj Oliver, district collector, told The Nat

Kylie Moore-Gilbert: Iran still believes I’m a spy

Image
An Australian-British academic who was locked up in Iran's notorious Evin prison on trumped up espionage charges has revealed Tehran is continuing to spy on her as she attempts to rebuild her life in Australia. After 804 days in the Iranian jail, Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert’s release should have marked the end of her trauma. But when she returned to her homeland in a prisoner swap in November 2020, the harassment and the hacking continued. Despite fruitless and relentless questioning behind bars, elements of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps remain convinced that Dr Moore-Gilbert is a “dangerous Zionist spy”. She was sentenced to 10 years in jail — the standard punishment for dual-citizen prisoners convicted on fabricated security charges — and spent months in solitary confinement. Now, as an outspoken critic of the Iranian regime and champion of the prisoners she left behind, Dr Moore-Gilbert believes Iran’s intelligence services are continuing to track her activities more than

Spain changes its position and a diplomatic and political crisis is overcome - Gustavo de Arístegui

Image
Spain changes its position, a diplomatic and political crisis is overcome, but Morocco must provide guarantees on Ceuta and Melilla, territorial waters and migration, says Gustavo de Arístegui , former ambassador of Spain in India. When a government in a state political matter makes a substantive success, even though it has made a mistake in the form, it is necessary to analyze the substance and not just the form, Gustavo de Arístegui explains: “We truly believe that the gesture of the President of the Government to go to Ceuta and Melilla to reaffirm the undeniable, non-negotiable, inalienable and always defendable Spanishness of Ceuta, Melilla and the Canary Islands seems to me to be a success. Criticizing that seems to me an error of analysis, perception and even patriotism, on the other hand, we all know that the demands are going to be more formal than anything else, they cannot be compared”.  Gustavo also clearly underlines that when the parallel is drawn between the situatio

British PM Boris Johnson arrives in India for a two-day visit

The trip is Mr Johnson’s first to India and the first ever by any British prime minister to Ahmedabad — the capital of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat. The Prime Minister will visit a new factory being opened by a top British firm in Gujarat, as well as a biotechnology university working in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh. The city, a major commercial hub, is known as the "Manchester of India" for its cotton-textile industry and is the ancestral home to about half of the Anglo-Indian population in Britain. “As I arrive in India today, I see vast possibilities for what our two great nations can achieve together. From next-generation 5G telecoms and AI to new partnerships in health research and renewable energy — the UK and India are leading th
