Elon Musk opens door to a Tesla talent exodus

Image
Elon Musk needs to cut one in ten jobs at Tesla. Some may already have their eye on the exit. The Tesla chief executive’s intentions, conveyed in an internal email seen by Reuters, are rooted in what he described as his “super bad feeling” about the US economy. Some of the nearly 100,000 people employed at the electric carmaker may already be considering their options after Musk issued them with a return-to-office ultimatum this week. In an email sent to staff Tuesday night, Musk threatened to fire anyone who did not work in the office 40 hours a week, a sharp contrast to flexibility offered by Big Tech companies that compete for the same talent pool. The office edict, on top of a steep drop in Tesla’s share price this year – partly due to Musk’s costly pursuit of Twitter – and his public alignment with the Republican party are a toxic mix for some staff. Elon Musk says Tesla on his mind 24/7 amid investor concerns about Twitter deal

Image
Billionaire businessman Elon Musk said Tesla is on his mind “24/7" in a bid to soothe investor concerns that he is being distracted by his $44 billion Twitter acquisition deal, which has weighed on the stock price of the world's largest electric vehicle maker that he runs. “To be clear, I’m spending 5 per cent (but actually) of my time on the Twitter acquisition. It ain’t rocket science!” the world’s richest person tweeted to his 94.1 million followers on Thursday. “Yesterday was Giga Texas, today is Starbase. Tesla is on my mind 24/7.” To be clear, I’m spending <5% (but actually) of my time on the Twitter acquisition. It ain’t rocket science! Yesterday was Giga Texas, today is Starbase. Elon Musk fans solicit future Twitter jobs by tweeting at him

Image
Although Elon Musk’s $44 billion deal to acquire Twitter is still months away from closing, some of Mr Musk’s fans are soliciting future employment at the social media platform via the mercurial entrepreneur’s Twitter feed. Considerable turnover is likely, at least based on Mr Musk’s Twitter feed, which is often critical of leadership. So Mr Musk’s followers are taking their shot. “Hire me to run Twitter as VP of Product,” wrote Nikita Bier, co-founder of a positivity-focused polling app called tbh that was acquired by Meta Platforms, in a post tagging Mr Musk on Twitter. “I’ve been building social apps for 11 years – and not in a way that leads products to decay like a typical BigTech ‘product director dad.’” . @elonmusk Hire me to run Twitter as VP of Product. I’ve been building social apps for 11 years—and not in a way that leads products to decay like a typical BigTech “product director dad.” Twitter has the potential to be the leading messenger, groups app & content creation ...

Data explosion driving demand for Japanese company that moves chips in factories

Image
For close to four decades, one Japanese company has been trusted to move silicon wafers around the factories of the world’s biggest chip manufacturers. Now it is going back to the drawing board and redesigning its ubiquitous overhead conveyors to handle an exponential surge in data use and global chip demand. Daifuku has, over its 85 years in business, gone from ferrying documents between offices and hospital wards to handling the world’s most delicate microelectronics, making the conveyor belts and boxes that zip across the ceilings of modern semiconductor plants. Those containers and rails, which shuttle chips to different parts of the fabrication process at speeds of more than five 5 metres per second, will within years need to bear 100 kilograms — or five times their current load — chief executive Hiroshi Geshiro said. “Many in the industry are optimistic that growth is here to stay, as the amount of data that society must deal with has increased exponentially,” he told Bloomb...
