China “hopes and believes” Germany will support peaceful Taiwan ‘reunification’ China’s “hopes and believes” Germany will support China’s “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan, top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi told Germany’s foreign minister Annalena Baerbock in Beijing, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday. China once supported German reunification and hopes Germany will support China’s “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan, Wang, director of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC), told Baerbock. China claims democratically-run Taiwan as a breakaway region and has not ruled out using force to merge the island with mainland. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen’s government rejects China’s position on “reunification”, saying only the Taiwanese can decide their future. “The ‘Taiwan independence’ forces on the island are plotting to undermine the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and endanger peace in the Taiwan Strait,” Wang said, according to the ...

World must tell Taliban it’s going in wrong direction, says German foreign minister

BERLIN: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for the international community to send Afghanistan’s Taliban leadership the message that it is heading in the wrong direction. “Our influence on what happens inside Afghanistan is very limited. It depends on the Taliban making rational choices in their own economic interest, and that is not what they are doing right now,” said Baerbock during a visit to Islamabad, warning of a humanitarian disaster brewing in the country. “It is not the Afghan people’s fault that their government was overthrown by the Taliban,” she said on Tuesday at a joint news conference with her Pakistani counterpart, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Mercedes to recall one million older cars on fear of faulty brakes

Image
German carmaker Mercedes-Benz is recalling nearly one million older vehicles worldwide due to a potential problem with the braking system, the federal transport authority (KBA) said. The KBA said in a statement dated June 1 and reported late Saturday in German media that the recall affected cars built between 2004 and 2015, of the SUV series ML and GL and the R-Class luxury minivan. “Corrosion on the brake booster can in the worst case lead to the connection between the brake pedal and the braking system being interrupted,” the KBA said. “As a consequence, the service brake can stop functioning.” The KBA said that worldwide 993,407 vehicles were being recalled, including around 70,000 in Germany. Families of four Europeans jailed in Iran demand greater efforts for their release

Image
The families of four European Union citizens held in Iranian prisons have called on the German and Austrian governments to punish Tehran over its hostage-taking policy. The families of the dual citizens — Germans Nahid Taghavi and Jamshid Sharmahd and Austrians Massud Mossaheb and Kamran Ghaderi — called on the two foreign ministers to show that human rights were not just “empty phrases” and demand their release. They questioned whether the two governments were doing enough to confront Iran over what they described as its “hostage-taking” policy — targeting foreign citizens to use as pawns in a broader diplomatic dispute with European governments. “Are all measures being taken to free our loved ones?” the families of the four asked, in an open letter to foreign ministers Annalena Baerbock of Germany and Alexander Schallenberg of Austria. “When, if not now, would it be time to publicly name our loved ones; to stand behind them, your citizens, and to demand their release with all ve...

Tesla will hand the first Model Y cars made at its €5 billion ($5.5bn) Gruenheide plant to clients on Tuesday, launching its first European production hub with the biggest investment in a German car factory in recent history. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will attend the ceremony alongside Tesla chief executive Elon Musk, marking a moment Mr Musk had hoped would happen eight months ago but local authorities say has come comparatively quickly for a project of its size. The opening comes as Mr Musk has flagged Master Plan Part 3 for Tesla, which, he said, will map out scaling Tesla to "extreme size". Newly completed Tesla Model Y electric cars stand at the new Tesla Gigafactory electric car manufacturing plant on March 21, 2022 near Gruenheide, Germany.  With plans to hire 12,000 workers, the German gigafactory and adjacent battery plant will become the biggest employer in the German state of Brandenburg, where it is based. At full capacity, it will produce 500,000 cars annual...
