Indians demand return of Koh-i-Noor diamond after Queen Elizabeth II's funeral

Image
For centuries the stone was owned by kings in the Indian subcontinent before British colonisers took it and made it a prized possession of the monarchy. For decades, Indians , Pakistanis, Afghans and Iranians have laid claim to the precious stone, which is believed to bring bad luck to its male owners. Britain has consistently declined the claims and asserted they were legal owners of the gemstone, a view held by India’s Supreme Court which ruled that the diamond was not looted or stolen but procured by the colonisers through a legal treaty. But social media users in India have been demanding the return of the famed gemstone since the queen’s died on September 8, promoting petitions for the cause. Venkatesh Shukla started a petition aiming to get 1 million signatures on LinkedIn, reminding the “honourable country” UK to return the “loot”. So far, it has just 6,500 signatures. “Every time the crown appears with Koh-i-Noor as the jewel of the crown, it reminds the world of Britain's

US aircraft carrier arrives in South Korea as warning to the North

Image
A US aircraft carrier arrived in South Korea on Friday for the first time in about four years, where it will join other military vessels in a show of force intended to send a message to North Korea. USS Ronald Reagan and ships from its accompanying strike group docked at a naval base in the southern port city of Busan ahead of joint drills with South Korean forces. Its arrival marks the most significant deployment yet under a new push to have more US "strategic assets" operate in the area to deter North Korea. Strike group commander Rear Admiral Michael Donnelly told reporters aboard the ship that the visit was designed to build allied relations and boost interoperability between the navies. "We are leaving messaging to diplomats," he said, when asked about any signal to North Korea, but said that joint drills would ensure the allies were able to respond to all threats. Pakistan PM says 'all hell' will break loose if debt deal not reached

Image
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif fears that all hell will break loose if a debt deal is not reached to aid the flood-stricken country as the threat of epidemics looms large. More than 1,400 people have been killed and 33 million affected by record flooding and monsoon rains which battered the country in recent months, and also caused devastation in neighbouring Afghanistan. Recovery is estimated to cost at least $30 billion. In an interview with Bloomberg in New York, where he was scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Friday, Mr Sharif said he had spoken to European leaders and creditor nations to secure a moratorium on debt, some of which is due in the next two months. “Unless we get substantial relief, how can the world expect from us to stand on our own feet?" he said. "It is simply impossible." Thousands of doctors have been sent to Pakistan's worst-hit province of Sindh to battle against the spread of waterborne diseases. More than 134,000

The “fiscal event,” as it is officially known, will announce tens of billions of pounds of increased spending and tax cuts. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend state funeral of Japan's Shinzo Abe

Image
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Japan next week to attend the state funeral of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated during an election campaign event in July. Mr Modi, who described the Japanese leader as a "dear friend" is expected to join about 50 world leaders including Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau, his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese and US Vice President Kamala Harris for the funeral on September 27. Abe was delivering a speech near a train station in the western city of Nara when he was shot by an assailant on July 8. He was flown to hospital, where he was not breathing and his heart stopped, officials said. He was 67. The Abe family held a private Buddhist funeral ceremony for the former leader in July at a temple in Tokyo. It was the first assassination of a sitting or former Japanese prime minister since the 1930s. India's Foreign Ministry said Mr Modi would separately meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio K

Vladimir Putin’s war is failing. The West should help it fail faster

Image
One of the many excuses Vladimir Putin has given for invading the country next door is that Ukraine and Russia are “one nation”, which should be united under his benign rule. “Do you still think that?” asked Ukraine’s president, as his troops swept thousands of Russian invaders from Kharkiv province this week. Volodymyr Zelensky’s triumphant sarcasm was justified. The Kharkiv counter-offensive, which began on September 5th, marks the most dramatic Russian reversal since Mr Putin abandoned his effort to seize Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, at the end of March. Its significance is not just the liberation of 6,000 square kilometres of territory in a few days—more than Russia had gained in the previous five months. Nor is it Ukraine’s seizure of the tanks, guns and boxes of ammunition that the Russian soldiers left behind as they fled in disorder. Ukraine has also recaptured two transport hubs, Izyum and Kupyansk, which Russia needs if it is to complete its conquest of the Donbas region and

Ukraine war: Zelensky calls for 'just punishment' for Russia

Image
Russia must face "just punishment" over its invasion of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky has told the UN General Assembly in New York. In a pre-recorded video, the Ukrainian leader called for the creation of a special war tribunal and detailed alleged war crimes by Russia. He also set out a "formula", including more military support and to punish Russia on the world stage. Russia's Vladimir Putin had earlier called up 300,000 reservists for duty. The move prompted rare protests in dozens of Russian cities and Mr Zelensky said the partial mobilisation showed his enemy was not serious about peace talks. Monitoring group OVD-Info said 1,315 Russians had been arrested. The Kremlin said the call-up would be limited to those who had completed military service and had important skills and combat experience. But some of those arrested during protests in Moscow were also told they would have to sign up, reports say. The Ukrainian leader said creating a special tribu

Ukraine war: Hundreds of graves found in liberated Izyum city - officials

Image
Ukraine says hundreds of graves have been found outside Izyum, days after the town was re-taken from Russia. Wooden crosses, most of them marked with numbers, were discovered in a forest outside the town by advancing Ukrainian forces. Authorities said they would start exhuming some of the graves on Friday. It is not yet clear what happened to the victims, but early accounts suggest some may have died from shelling and a lack of access to healthcare. There are also signs that some of the graves could belong to Ukrainian soldiers. Regional police head Volodymyr Tymoshko told the BBC more than 400 bodies were thought to have been buried at the site. Izyum, invaded in the early days of the war, was used by Russia as a key military hub to supply its forces from the east. In his nightly address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said the "necessary procedural actions" had begun in the area. "We want the world to know what is really happening and what the Russian occupation has led
