US bans purchases from Huawei and other Chinese firms over security risk

Image
The US has banned approvals of new telecoms equipment from China 's Huawei Technologies and ZTE because they pose “an unacceptable risk” to national security. The US Federal Communications Commission said on Friday it had adopted the final rules, which also bar the sale or import of equipment made by Chinese surveillance equipment maker Dahua Technology, video surveillance firm Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology and telecoms firm Hytera Communications. The move represents the US's latest moves against the Chinese technology companies amid fears that Beijing could use them to spy on Americans. “These new rules are an important part of our ongoing actions to protect the American people from national security threats involving telecoms,” FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said. NEET PG 2022: Supreme Court seeks Centre's response to reservation policy allegedly not followed in exam

Image

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for petitioner Pankaj Kumar Mandal and others, said candidates who applied in the reserved category but scored high marks making them eligible for admission in the general category, were still being allotted quota seats in violation of the apex court's verdicts in the past. Responding to Bhushan's contention, Bhati said, "We are bound by the reservation policy which has been indicated in the N

Europe a 'few years' away from overcoming energy deficit, OMV chief says

Image
Europe is a “few years” away from overcoming its current energy deficit triggered by the loss of Russian gas supply, according to Alfred Stern, chief executive of Austrian energy group OMV. The continent is in the middle of its worst energy crisis after Russia, the region’s biggest natural gas supplier, curtailed exports sharply in response to EU sanctions over its military offensive in Ukraine. However, the crisis has been a few years in the making. Spending on new oil and gas projects has nearly dried up amid pressure from investors, who have adopted more pro-renewable energy strategies in recent years. This issue is “bigger than Europe” and is a result of underinvestment in the energy sector, as well as from “thinking that we could magically move to renewable energy overnight”, Mr Stern told The National at the Adipec energy summit in Abu Dhabi. “Fixing this up will require significant investments, and typically, our industry is one that has very long investment cycles,” he said. Blinken hosts Armenia and Azerbaijan diplomats to boost US mediation role

Image
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has hosted a high-level meeting between Armenian and Azerbaijani Foreign Ministers Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov, in a bid to elevate Washington’s role as a mediator in the South Caucasus. Monday's meeting in Washington was the second involving the two countries to be chaired by Mr Blinken in less than five weeks. Mr Blinken reiterated the Biden administration's commitment to peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. “Direct dialogue is the best way to a truly durable peace, and we are very pleased to support that,” he said. Mr Blinken said the 30-year conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region has had taken a tremendous toll and left "scars that are deep". But following a truce that Washington brokered last September, Mr Blinken said: “What we are seeing now are real steps, and courageous steps, by both countries to put the past behind and to work toward a durable peace.” Mr Blinken said the US strongly supports the

New Zealand mosque shooter appeals against life sentence

Image
A man who killed more than 50 people in a 2019 mosque massacre in New Zealand has appealed against his life sentence, Australian citizen Brenton Tarrant filed an appeal against his conviction, court officials told news agencies on Tuesday. Tarrant shot dead 51 worshippers and injured 40 others at two Christchurch mosques. His victims included men, women and children who had gathered for Friday prayers. The attack, which was live-streamed by Tarrant, shook the small island nation and prompted gun reform in New Zealand. Tarrant was sentenced to life in prison without parole in August 2020, the first person in New Zealand ordered to spend the rest of his life behind bars. Judge Cameron Mander said he was imposing the harshest possible term for Tarrant's "inhuman" actions. "Your crimes are so wicked, that even if you are detained until you die it will not exhaust the requirements of punishment and denunciation," he said at the time. The father of a 3-year-old boy ki

Global travel demand continues to recover, despite economic and geopolitical uncertainties

Image
Global passenger demand for air travel remained strong in September, with both domestic and international traffic increasing, despite macroeconomic headwinds and geopolitical instability, the International Air Transport Association said. Total traffic in September, measured in revenue passenger kilometres, grew 57 per cent compared to the same month in 2021, Iata's monthly report showed. Globally, traffic is now at 73.8 per cent of September 2019 levels, before the Covid-19 pandemic, said the report, which was released on Monday. “Even with economic and geopolitical uncertainties, the demand for air transport continues to recover ground,” said Willie Walsh, Iata's director general. “The outlier is still China, with its pursuit of a zero-Covid strategy keeping borders largely closed.” Airlines' domestic traffic for September was up 6.9 per cent compared to the year-ago period. Total September 2022 domestic traffic was at 81 per cent of pre-Covid levels. International traffic

Arizona voters mistrustful as election day arrives

Image
Outside the Maricopa County Recorder’s office in downtown Phoenix, amid a hum of construction, Don Newton searched for a location where he could drop off his ballot for the midterm elections. The 82-year-old said he doesn’t trust the ballot boxes the county has set up to help facilitate early voting — and he’s not alone. “There’s a movie out there called 2000 Mules with all sorts of video of the stolen election, with the ballot boxes out there in the sticks with no lights on them or anything,” he said. The film Mr Newton cited has been widely debunked. But that hasn’t stopped it from sewing an alarming degree of mistrust in the electoral process among a wide swath of Americans. In Arizona, it has inspired far right groups to send people — sometimes armed and wearing body armour — to monitor ballot boxes. Those armed poll watchers were affiliated with a group calling itself Clean Elections USA. Led by an evangelical Christian pastor from Oklahoma, Clean Elections USA, has advocated for

Flexible working threatened by global economic uncertainty

Image
About 68 per cent of business leaders globally believe that progress made on flexible working during the Covid-19 pandemic is now at risk as companies navigate economic uncertainty, according to a survey by professional network LinkedIn. The current global climate is slowing down progress in important areas of working life, with 75 per cent of business leaders worried it will affect employee well-being, 74 per cent concerned about skills development and 68 per cent saying it will weigh on flexible work arrangements, the research showed. The study polled more than 2,900 executive-level managers from large companies across the US, the UK, Germany, the UAE, Australia and other countries between September 27 and October 19. “As we have seen in the last couple of years, flexible working and learning and development have become important elements in ensuring business resilience,” said Ali Matar, head of LinkedIn Mena and Venture Markets. “While difficult decisions undoubtedly have to be made
