How and why wildfires are scorching Europe

 Southwest Europe continues to battle devastating wildfires with sweltering temperatures and extreme heat forcing thousands out of their homes and sending holidaymakers scurrying for safety.

Britain and France went on heatwave alert on Monday bracing for record temperatures as southwest Europe wilted under a scorching sun and ferocious wildfires devoured more forests.

This after Portugal and Spain and France saw armies of firefighters battle blazes and Irish forecasters predicting a taste of blistering Mediterranean-style summer temperatures.

In pictures: Drought in Europe exposes sunken ships, lost villages and ominous 'hunger stones'

Europe has been suffering weeks of drought, with persistent heatwaves leading to evacuations and deaths. Rivers and lakes have dried, causing major problems for shipping and other vessels. The receding water levels have also revealed some usually-buried treasures. The most ominous of these are "hunger stones", engraved at the waterline of rivers during previous droughts as a warning to future generations that when the stones are above water, hardship lies ahead. Most of the stones have reappeared on the banks of the river Elbe, which flows from the Czech Republic through Germany. One stone, which was first carved as far back as the 15th Century, also surfaced in 1616, when locals inscribed into it the words "if you see me, cry". Low water levels in the Danube in Serbia have revealed the sunken remains of World War Two ships, still loaded with explosives.  More than 3.5 million people have fled Ukraine since the war began in late February, said the UNHCR on Tuesday. The latest UN figures came a day after Ukraine said that up to 12 million people had been driven from their homes by the Russian invasion as officials in central Europe said they were reaching full capacity to look after refugees. Ukraine's major cities again came under heavy bombardment from Russian artillery and air strikes on Tuesday. The southern city of Mariupol has been largely destroyed but remained in Ukrainian control as of Tuesday afternoon.
