'Satluj' Removed From ZEE5 Days After Release Amid Concerns Over Sensitive Content

The recently released film Satluj, starring Diljit Dosanjh, has been taken down from the ZEE5 streaming platform just days after its premiere, with sources indicating that certain portions of the movie raised concerns about potential misuse by anti-India elements.

The film, originally titled Punjab 95, debuted on ZEE5 on July 3 after facing years of delays and controversies surrounding its release. However, following a review, the platform withdrew the movie from its catalogue in India.

According to sources, the film had previously sought clearance for a theatrical release but was unable to obtain approval in its existing form. Concerns were reportedly raised over specific scenes and content that authorities believed could be sensitive or open to misinterpretation.

While OTT platforms are not required to obtain certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), digital content is governed by self-regulatory mechanisms and government guidelines for sensitive material.

The film is inspired by the life and work of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and focuses on efforts to investigate alleged extrajudicial killings during the period of militancy in Punjab.

In an official statement shared on Instagram, ZEE5 confirmed the removal of Satluj and said the film would remain unavailable in India until further notice. The streaming platform expressed support for the project and its creators, describing it as a significant work of storytelling.

ZEE5 also stated that it would pursue all appropriate legal and procedural avenues to restore access to the film for audiences in the future, while reaffirming its commitment to supporting meaningful and impactful narratives.

Meanwhile, Diljit Dosanjh reacted to the development through a social media post, sharing an image from the film alongside a message that appeared to reference the challenges faced by both the movie and the activist whose life inspired the story.

The film's journey to release has been marked by prolonged delays. Submitted to the CBFC in 2022 under the title Punjab 95, the project remained under review for nearly three years. The filmmakers had earlier claimed that numerous cuts were suggested before the film eventually reached audiences through an OTT release under its new title, Satluj.
